- Biography Our music has its roots in the polyrhythmic mbira traditions of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. In 1985, we were the Grin and Bear It String Clan performing Irish and Old Time music at the NW Folklife Festival. There we encountered the marimba version of this music, caught the spark, and Tropical Montana Marimba Ensemble was born. We have been playing and learning ever since.
